In 2010, a decade since I took my first class at a community college, I resumed my pursuit for a four-year degree. Three years later, I transferred to the University of Texas at Dallas to complete my Bachelors of Science in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship. I have been fortunate enough to come across excellent professors both inside and outside the classroom. I have also made lasting connections and friendships with other students and hope to continue to do so before I graduate in May 2015.
School Project 1: Pitch Competition, Zero Fabrication (ENTP 3301)
In Entrepreneurship, our class participated in a semester-long pitch competition. In the opening weeks of class, we were asked to submit an idea for a business. The class voted on the 12 best ideas and groups were formed around these prospective companies. I submitted my idea for a small parts fabrication company for the custom knife industry and was one of the selected ideas. The class groups were then to create a pitch to be shown and refined several times before our instructor selected the four best presentations. The final four groups pitched our ideas in front of actual venture capitalists in the Davidson Auditorium, modeled after the show Shark Tank. This culminated in winning selection voted on by the panel. My group won with our business idea, Zero Fabrication. A month later, I presented again during the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Luncheon and made extensive contacts in the local venture capitalist scene.

School Project 2: Marketing Strategy for Half-Price Books (MKT 3300)
In Principles of Marketing, my group was asked to select a company facing a difficult marketing decision and create a strategy supporting a marketing plan. We selected Half-Price Books and its expansion possibilities in a declining printed book market. After sifting through several strategies, we decided the best plan was the simplest one: to remain in a segment with tangible goods and a heavy secondary market, bolstering its presence in the rekindled vinyl record industry. This was my introduction to group work on a university level. We delegated tasks evenly, worked both alone and together and received an A for our presentation.
